The Story Behind PURE Sports Nutrition: Q&A with Cofounder Marewa Sutherland
Q: How did PURE Sports Nutrition come about?
Marewa: My brother and I started PURE because there was a need for a product that essentially delivered. We were athletes at the time, cycle racing heavily and there was nothing available that worked the way we wanted it to. Simon had the idea, he floated it past me, and we knew straight away there was a massive gap in the market.
Q: What was wrong with what was available at the time?
Marewa: Everything on the market was sickly sweet, really hard to get down, and full of filler ingredients. We thought there’s room for something that isn’t over flavoured, tastes subtle, and actually delivers results. We figured out if we put the highest quality ingredients in, it could taste great and still perform.
Q: How did you go from idea to launch?
Marewa: We spent over a year researching then testing finished product. Being athletes, we gave it to everyone we knew. By the time it came to market, we already knew it worked. That ethos has stuck – We know everything we bring to market delivers on intention.
Q: What was your first product?
Marewa: Our first product was an electrolyte hydration formula. It took over a year to get the blend right – subtle taste, rapid hydration, and fast gastric emptying so it didn’t upset your stomach.
Q: And then you moved onto gels?
Marewa: Yes, back then gels were thick and really hard to get down. That’s when we developed the fluid gel. It’s lighter, easier to stomach, and still fuels you properly. The feedback was really positive – people kept saying, ‘This is epic. I can actually get it down.’
Q: How do you keep evolving your products?
Marewa: As the science around nutrition evolves, so do we. Performance Plus came from pushing those limits, using emerging research and some pretty functional ingredients to elevate products for training and racing.
Q: Where do you see PURE heading next?
Marewa: Sports nutrition is exciting and evolving. For us, it’s not about making more products, it’s about making better ones. We want athletes to train harder, race stronger and fuel with confidence.
